General information

The Maciej Nałęcz Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences was founded in 1975 and is the largest biomedical engineering centre in Poland. The Institute has a long history of training and rewarding young biomedical engineering experts. It is one of only two scientific institutions authorised to confer doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in this discipline. Since 2009, the Institute has been running Doctoral Studies. IBIB PAN is the national coordinator of the Biomedical Engineering Network in Poland (BIOMEN), and was the coordinator and co-implementer of the national Foresight project on the development of „Scenarios for the Development of Medical Technologies in Poland until 2020”. According to the assessment of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Institute is a first category institution, ranked 4th out of 53 institutions in the group of research units in the field of „Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Electronics and Information Technology”.
In 2008. IBIB PAN joined the newly established BIOCENTRUM Ochota consortium, which also includes: Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAN, Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics PAN, Mossakowski Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine PAN, Institute of Fundamental Technological Research PAN and International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology.
The institute currently employs 140 staff including 12 full professors and 11 associate professors.
As of 2017, the structure of the Institute consists of four departments and a stand-alone Environmental Laboratory:
- SCOPE I - Hybrid and Analytical Microbiosystems
- COMPOSITION II - Biomaterials and Biotechnology Systems
- SCOPE III - Methods of Brain Imaging and Functional Research of the Nervous System
- COMPOSITION IV - The modeling and support of internal organ function
The scope of the Institute's research in the field of biocybernetics and biomedical engineering corresponds to the latest research directions in world science, and the research is interdisciplinary.
Research areas
The Maciej Nałęcz Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBIB PAN) focuses its research work on two main areas. The most important research issues within these areas are listed below:
- Bio-measurement and computer data processing for improved medical diagnosis
1.1. Bio-measurements for improved medical diagnostics Bio-sensors and microsystems for size analysis Biochemistry (lab-on-a-chip devices). High-resolution electrocardiographic maps. Laser-Doppler measurements for monitoring and imaging tissue microperfusion. Time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy for monitoring and imaging tissue oxygenation. Dry chemical and biochemical tests. Periocular function testsNon-invasive measurement of respiratory parameters.
1.2 Computer data processing for improved medical diagnosis Computer aided image processing in medical imaging.
Signal and image analysis using chaos theory and fractal geometry. Visualisation and three-dimensional analysis of biological structures in the cell and at the cell population level, and visualisation and analysis of cell motility. Early recognition of bladder cancer cells. Processing and analysis of biomedical databases. EEG and EMG analyses.
- Supporting and replacing lost bodily functions
2.1. Technical support and replacement of lost bodily functions
Biocompatible, flat semi-permeable membranes for biomedical applications. Cell culture and tissue engineering oriented towards liver reconstitution and stem cell differentiation. Hybrid biosystems to support and control the production of regulatory substances, including anticancer and insulin. Membrane techniques for extracorporeal blood purification. Pancreatic islet xenotransplantation. Information and telecommunication technologies to support monitoring and management of selected chronic diseases (especially diabetes). Technical support for the treatment of disorders of respiratory function and function. Investigation of spinal cord injury and transplantation. Study of motoneuron control function in normal and pathology. Electrotherapy in cardiac rhythm and haemodynamic disorders.
2.2 Mathematical models and computer simulations of organ function
Membrane transport theory. Fluid and solute transport in peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis. Computer modelling and hybrid support of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Modelling the human respiratory system and artificial lung ventilation. Modelling of muscle structure and mechanism of force generation in cells. „Virtual patient” model for simulation of renal replacement therapies.
