Topic: Nanobiosystems for biological processes regulation for therapeutic purposes
Research area: nanobiomaterial engineering, nanohybrid systems for the regulation of biological processes
The Laboratory uses and develops state-of-the-art nanobiomaterial engineering techniques in systems for regulating biological processes to support or replace tissue or organ function or anti-cancer effects.
Work is carried out in the following aspects:
a) construction of targeted systems for delivering therapeutic or anti-cancer agents;
b) design of systems built of nanoelements with antimicrobial activity to cooperate with eukaryotic cells;
c) application of nanobiomaterials in systems for supporting the directed growth of eukaryotic cells.
This involves, among others, the preparation and characterization of materials that demonstrate high application potential in terms of their later use in nanosystems intended, among others, for releasing a therapeutic agent. Within the characterization of biomaterials we standardized methods of biocompatibility assessment.
In addition, work is carried out using the immobilization of biologically active material in membranes. Among the techniques we use, we should mention bioencapsulation, including nanoencapsulation, macroencapsulation and microencapsulation.
The research programs carried out in the Laboratory concerned, among others, effective nanocoating of biological material for immunoisolation purposes, including artificial pancreas, as well as analysis of the influence of factors produced by immobilized microorganisms on eukaryotic cells. Recently, work has been carried out on the construction of multilayer nanocomposite systems used to support the healing of difficult-to-heal wounds.
The conducted research uses, among others: confocal microscopy, atomic force microscopy, spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, as well as flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy.
Keywords: bioencapsulation, immobilization, membrane, metallic nanoparticles, nanosystem, biocompatibility, anticancer therapy, antibacterial activity, antiviral activity, healing of difficult-to-heal wounds, nanobiomaterial.
