Description of research conducted in the Laboratory:

The Laboratory for Processing and Analysis of Microscopic Images conducts research in the field of processing and analysis of microscopic images and their sequences created in various types of microscopy. The images document the behavior or condition of medical and biological samples relevant to the medical research and practice. The analysis concerns both the quantitative description of cells and tissues, and their qualitative description - tissue architecture, cell dispersion or aggregation, as well as the description of the behavior and dynamics of cell growth in cell cultures. For quantitative analysis, the methods of object recognition, detection, and segmentation in the classic version, as well as the modern methods based on neural networks, are used. The results of our work support the physicians and biologists in the difficult time-consuming assessment of stained tissue sections or cell smears with automatic or semi-automatic methods of computational pathology.

Scope of the research to be carried out by the Employee

Performing a research on methods supporting the evaluation process of virtual slides means digital versions of stained tissue preparations in neoplastic and inflammatory diseases in order to propose and verify methods of supporting physicians in their diagnostic, predictive or prognostic work. Organizing the data preparation process and conducting the explainable neural network learning based on the needs reported by cooperating pathologists or clinicians. Preparation of software that performs the inference and testing using a large set of data, correlation the results of analyzes with the quantities and divisions into classes and categories, as well as therapeutic facts, etc, proposed by physicians. Publishing the methods and tools for research and the results of applying methods to solve some specific categories of medical problems in journals with IF>1.

A candidate for the position of Senior Researcher Assistent should meet the following requirements:

Education:

The title of doctor or doctor of engineering or in the discipline of Biomedical Engineering or related sciences: computer science, mathematics, physics, technical sciences as well as biology and medicine obtained not earlier than 6 years ago..

Scientific/professional achievements:

  1. Scientific achievements in the field of biomedical engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics as well as medicine or biology documented in publications. At least two articles with first authorship in the last 5 years, including at least 1 in an international journal on List A of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education;
  2. At least 1 research project in which the Candidate participated or led.

Experience:

  1. Required general knowledge in the field of biomedical engineering, image processing and artificial intelligence as well as deep knowledge of topics related to the recognition and analysis of images using classical methods and methods based on machine learning of deep neural networks.
  2. Ability to efficiently program (preferably in MatLab or Python software) and use software for image manipulation as well as advanced support for MS Office and LaTeX packages.
  3. The ability to plan and perform team work as well as to lead and support employees at the first stage of scientific work - R1.

Additional requirements:

Knowledge of English enabling the candidate reading research papers and publications and writing research reports.

c. the list of completed research projects, including the sources of financing and the financial dimensions (e.g. research projects of the Ministry of Education and Science, projects in EU Programs, work commissioned by economic entities),

d. the list of projects implemented in scientific cooperation with foreign countries,

e. the list of national and international scientific societies and committees of which the candidate was or is a member,

f. the declaration of the candidate that in the event of winning the competition, IBIB PAS will be their primary place of work.
