Description of research conducted in the Laboratory:

The Laboratory for Biomedical Optics conducts research on a development of methods for monitoring and imaging a brain with the use of optoelectronic techniques. Currently, the construction of a brain imaging system using time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy is carried out. We are planning to evaluate the possibility of using this imaging technique in neurophysiological research and clinical applications. Instrumental work will concern the construction of a multi-channel near infrared spectroscopy system based on the measurement of the distribution of time of flight of photons diffused in the examined tissue. The measurement system is based on 32 detectors with electronics for time-correlated single photon counting and 16 laser radiation sources. The system under development is one of the most advanced time-resolved systems for clinical applications.

The source and detection optical fibers positioned on a head will allow to measure the distribution of time of flight of photons for many combinations of source-detector pairs. The research will also focus on the development of signal analysis methods that will allow for the tomographic reconstruction of oxygenated and reduced hemoglobin concentration in the cerebral cortex on the basis of the measured time of flight.

The measurements are planned to be evolved on healthy volunteers during stimulation of the cerebral cortex and at rest, the purpose of which will be to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method for brain imaging. Ultimately, the technique will be tested in clinical applications. In particular, research will focus on the usefulness of this imaging method for the assessment of blood supply or oxygenation disorders in the brain of patients with stroke or post-traumatic lesions.

A candidate for the position of Graduate Researche Assistant should meet the following requirements:


Master's degree in engineering and technical sciences in the discipline of biomedical engineering, electronics, information technology or related disciplines
